Elevarte is a community based organization, which uses the arts as a catalyst for youth development. Challenged with refreshing the current 700sf space which houses both office and after school programs, a design strategy was developed utilizing youth from the programs as the central design and construction team. This strategy honored the organizational tradition of innovation and engaging youth as change agents and critical thinkers. A partnership was established between Job Corps, which trains youth in trade skills, to be the general contractor for the project. The Job Corps team worked side by side with volunteer youth and staff to completely overhaul the space from furnishings to finishes on a budget of $2,000 and a time frame of one week.
